Barriers to Employment

  • For those Aboriginal people who are aware of apprenticeship and the trades, they regard these options as a last choice compared to university and college programs (Canadian Apprenticeship Forum, p14).
  •

  • Aboriginal people may find it more difficult to approach employersto find an apprenticeship, especially employers from outside their communities.
  •

  • This barrier can be due to cultural differences between Aboriginal youth and employer contacts. (Canadian Apprenticeship Forum, p22).
  •

  • Relocation is often necessary to complete Apprenticeship Training. Since local employment opportunities may be minimal, apprenticeship may cause Aboriginal youth to leave their communities and relocate for on-the-job or in-school training (Canadian Apprenticeship Forum, p15).
  •

  • Relocation can prevent many Aboriginal youth from forming a strong interest in apprenticeship (Canadian Apprenticeship Forum, p15).
