Disclosure

 

Involves an employee with a disability revealing to his or her employer that a disability exists and may require some form of accommodation

 

Reasons for Disclosure

To help an employer have a clear understanding of the situation or explain why troubles have arisen on the job.

 

When to Disclose:

  • Before a job interview or promotion

    •  

  • During a job interview or evaluation

    •  

  • When disability begins to hinder work performance

    •  

  • When employees and co-workers would be receptive

 

Reasons for Non-Disclosure:

  • Fear disclosing will lead to prejudice, discrimination or rejection

    •  

  • The feeling that disability may be seen as a weakness or incompetence

    •  

  • Unsure on how it will affect work

    •  

  • Unsure on how to disclose

    •  

  • Nature of disability (Robitaille, 2008)

Non-Disclosure:

“Many people choose not to disclose. However, typically the human rights code

does not protect individuals if they are unable or unwilling to disclose” “Disclosure is often beneficial; however, it is NOT always necessary. Disclosure remains the personal decision of the person with the disability” (Wilton, 2006).
