Approx. 1.85 million people in Ontario have disabilities, representing 15.5% of Ontarians, and 5.3% of Ontario’s youth aged 15-24 report having a disability (Statistics Canada, 2006). “The shortage of skilled trade’s people will worsen in the future if not immediately addressed. Its going to be hard and very expensive to live in a country where only a few know how to fix a broken car engine or leaky faucet or build well-crafted homes” (Canada Needs Skilled Trades, 2003).
Participation in the Labour Force
As of July 2008, 6.7 million people had jobs in Ontario,
3.2 million were female and 3.5 million were male, and 964,000 were youth aged 15-24. (Statistics Canada, 2008)
The employment rate for persons with disabilities in Ontario is much lower than that of persons without disabilities. (Statistics Canada, 2006).
The employment rate for persons with disabilities was 51.8% in 2006, and for persons without disabilities was 75.4% in 2006. (Statistics Canada, 2006)
