Manitoba skilled-trades wage deal helps close urban-rural gap Recommended pay hikes should help with labour supply

Manitoba hopes increasing wages will keep workers local along with enticing workers from other areas. Residents of this province will only benefit from the recent changes to the trades industry making Manitoba a better choice for skilled trade workers nation-wide. The benefit of this increase will be felt immediately as the Construction Industry Wage Consulting Panel stated to start the first wage increases to be in June 1, 2009.

The following example will explain how these wage improvements will take effect.

A journeyman carpenter is currently making $24.50/hr and in June the wage went up to $25.25/hr, by June 1st 2010 their wage will be $27.00 per hour. With similar incentives for all trades more young people should definitely take advantage and consider a career in the trades.

The overall result is that it will attract more people to relocate to this wonderful province and make it more prosperous.

Well done to contractors in the trades for working together to strengthen their industry and also Manitoba as a whole.
