We have four pictures of youth, arranged horizontally. First is a Caucasian girl in front of a map. Next, we have a young Asian man doing some construction work inside a house. Third, a Caucasian man with Down's syndrome works in an office. Finally, a young African-American woman smiling.

Disclosure

It is not necessary to disclose a disability. Employers may not ask candidates if they have a disability, its kind, how it affects them or about treatment. There are, however, several reasons why it should be discussed:

  • Persons with visible or behaviour-related disabilities, will want to let everyone know, so to ease tensions and clear up any confusions.
  • Anyone seeking accommodation will need to tell employers, but may also wish to inform co-workers, again to avoid awkard moments.
  • For safety's sake, a worker with a disability may want to inform a friend or co-worker about the disability, and how to care for him or her in case of a medical emergency. They may also want to display some form of personal health identification, so that anyone can help.
  • Disclosure is voluntary, so no one should feel pressured.
